Theme: Democracy and Nation Building: How Nations Grow – Lessons from the American Experience and Reflections for Nigeria

INTRODUCTION
Setting Leadership Initiative, in collaboration with the American Space Abuja, successfully held the June 2026 edition of its Leadership, Citizenship and Nation Building Series on 16 June 2026 at the American Space, FCT City Library, Zone 4, Abuja.
The programme formed part of the Setting Leadership Initiative’s flagship youth mentorship programme, “Imitate America and the West,” designed to mentor Nigerian youths in leadership, democratic values, responsible citizenship, nation building, and transformational leadership.
The lecture focused on the theme:
“Democracy and Nation Building: How Nations Grow – Lessons from the American Experience and Reflections for Nigeria.”
Resource Persons
The programme featured two presentations delivered by:
- Sir Dr. AK Peters, Executive Director, Setting Leadership Initiative.
- Dr. M. S. Abubakar, Guest Resource Person.
Both presentations provided participants with historical insights, practical leadership lessons, and comparative perspectives on democratic development and nation building.
Major Highlights
The presentations examined the concept of nation building as the deliberate process of creating stable institutions, promoting shared national values, strengthening unity, encouraging long-term thinking, and cultivating responsible citizenship.
Participants were invited to reflect on the remarkable story of a nation born out of protest, built through sacrifice, tested by civil war, challenged by deep internal contradictions, yet sustained by enduring ideas, resilient institutions, visionary leadership, and an unwavering belief in freedom. That nation is the United States of America.
The facilitators emphasized that the United States has become one of the world’s most influential nations not because it is without flaws, but because it deliberately built enduring institutions and systems that continue to outlive individual leaders.
Participants learned that nations rise or decline largely because of the choices they make. History, they were reminded, remains humanity’s greatest classroom. Wise nations study both successful and failed societies in order to chart a better future.
Drawing from the 250-year democratic journey of the United States, participants explored valuable lessons in:
- Freedom and liberty.
- Democratic governance.
- Constitutionalism and the rule of law.
- Visionary and accountable leadership.
- Quality education.
- Active citizenship and civic participation.
- Strong institutions.
- National unity and resilience.
Lessons for Nigeria
The programme challenged participants to reflect deeply on Nigeria’s future and demonstrated that sustainable national development requires commitment across generations.
- Among the major lessons emphasized were:
- A nation is not built within a single generation.
- Nation building is a relay race in which every generation receives a country, improves it, or damages it, and passes it on to the next.
- No nation undergoes meaningful transformation without the active involvement of its youth.
- The future of Nigeria rests significantly in the hands of today’s young people.
The facilitators further noted that many of the challenges confronting Nigeria today are not fundamentally different from those faced by the United States during its formative years. Through perseverance, visionary leadership, constitutional development, and institutional strengthening, the United States gradually transformed itself into a stable democracy.
Participants were encouraged to embrace and promote the principles of:
- The rule of law.
- Separation of powers.
- Responsible citizenship.
- Patriotism.
- Civic participation.
- Accountability.
- Institution building.
- National service.
The sessions concluded with a strong call on Nigerian youths to rise to the challenge of reshaping the nation’s future, just as earlier generations of Americans transformed their country through sacrifice, innovation, and commitment to democratic ideals.
The participants were reminded that Nigeria awaits a generation of courageous, disciplined, and visionary young leaders who will change the national narrative for the better.
Participation
The programme recorded the participation of 41 youths, comprising:
- 30 members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC); and
- 11 other young participants drawn from various backgrounds.
The interactive nature of the discussions, questions, and contributions reflected the participants’ enthusiasm and commitment to learning about leadership, democracy, and nation building.
Conclusion
The June 2026 edition of the Leadership, Citizenship and Nation Building Series achieved its objective of exposing young Nigerians to enduring democratic principles and practical lessons from the American experience while inspiring them to become active participants in Nigeria’s national development.
